Friday 8th April Halos vs. Northfield HS:10-1 Another hot day at Northfield HS gave the Halos the opportunity to better the Wings earlier visit (when the game ended as a 6-0 victory). By the time the first half had ended the Halos had their tally of six goals without a single reply from their opponents, so any goals they scored in the second half would better the Wings earlier effort. The first half goals came thick and fast as the Halos barely ventured back into their own half. The first came shortly after the start (3 mins.) from the shoe of Sophia Prendergast (her first of two goals) with Emily Turner scoring six minutes later (9 mins.) with a dazzling shot from close in. Shortly after (12 mins.) Elise Dapper scored the first of her two goals then on 17 minutes Chloe McNamee scored the first of her two goals. On the 25 minute mark Elise Dapper netted her second with Zeanna Ortiz scoring the first of her three goals (28 mins.) before a twelve minute dry spell leading to the half time whistle. The beginning of the second half saw Zeanna Ortiz score her second (47 mins.) and final (49 mins.) goals of the game to complete a wonderful hat-trick. Sophie Prendergast scored her second at 72 minutes just before, on an unusual venture into the Halos half, Northfield scored against the run of play. With the score now at 9-1 Chloe McNamee scored on 75 minutes to bring the victory to 10-1.
A proud Coach Szuster.

Wednesday 6th April Wings vs. Fairview HS. 4-4 From the usual exchange of pleasantries prior to the game I had the distinct impression, from speaking to the opposition coach, that this was going to be a tough game - within 25 minutes of kick off my worst fears were realized, we were down 3-0 and had hardly ventured into the opposition's half. Their coach had explained that their team was mostly freshman with just a couple of sophomores thrown in for good measure however when I viewed their size (and I reckon the country air out there in Boulder must make them grow bigger) I could see why they had easily won the four games they had played this season. After another painful ten minutes, with our team pinned down mostly in our own half, the break finally came when Olivia Dapper scored on 36 minutes just before the half time whistle. With a rallying cry and the wind at their backs they entered the second half a different team. The 3-1 score line was reduced to 3-2 with the Wings taking control of the game and Sophia Prendergast scoring on the 45th minute. The opposition had few and far advances into our half of the field during the second half however our comeback was foreshortened by an opposition break with resulted in a 20 yard short billowing the top left hand corner of our net and at that moment their lead was extended to 4-2. Undaunted by this setback the Wings applied pressure on their defence with wave after wave of attacks for the remainder of the game. One of these pushes led to Sophia Prendergast scoring her second goal on the 53 minute mark and yet another led to Sophia Antonopoulos scoring on 76 minutes - this brought the game to 4-4. Wings continued to keep the pressure on and came close to winning the tie a couple of times before the final whistle. With the game finishing at 4-4 this was the first game that Fairview had not won however, more importantly, this game added to the Wings unbeaten record. A fantastic squad effort with 21 players fielding on the day, each of them showing the grit and determination required to turn around a 3-1 deficit at half-time to almost pulling off a victory in the dying seconds of the game.
A very proud (and nail-bitten) Coach Szuster.
Tuesday 5th April: Freshman Training @ City Park, Field #4, 3-4:30
Monday 4th April Halos vs. Littleton HS. 5-0 In the sizzling Spring heat and on only their second outing, the Halos were Away to a team who were similar in age and stature to their first game opponents - at the final whistle the difference this time would be the result. The opposition (playing with a blend of 50% freshman/50% sophomore) looked and played formidably for the first 17 minutes when the breakthrough came with a headed goal by Zeanna Ortiz from a well delivered cross from the shoe of Chloe McNamee. This then gave the team the confidence to dominate for the majority of this half. This domination showed when the Dapper twins (Elise then Olivia) scored their individual goals on the 26th and 32nd minutes. Chloe McNamee started her game in the second half with a goal of her own on the 55th minute which was followed by the final goal of the day (and her own second goal) by Elise Dapper on the 70th minute mark. In a second half again dominated by the Halos the opposition had very little time pushing forward. However, on those few occasions where the ball broke kindly for the opposition, and shots were released on the Halos goal, our last minute substitute goalkeeper Lily O'Brien kept the sheet clean with some outstanding saves. This allowed the Halos to return a well deserved and wonderful 5-0 victory for this their second game of the season.
A very proud (and burnt) Coach Szuster.

Monday 21st March 2016 Wings vs Northfield: 6-0 On a hot March day seventeen silky soccer superstars took to the field at Northfield HS. When the game was over seventeen returned home with tales, resplendent of feats of endurance leading to eventual victory. The early stages of the game saw both teams locked in battle with no obvious winner at this point. That all changed on the 20 minute mark when Chloe McNamee opened the scoring with a long distance shot from well outside the opposition's goal area. This goal gave the Wings the permission to then dominate the remaining 60 minutes of play. Even with the vast majority of the possession it took the Wings until just before the half time whistle to net their second goal (Chloe McNamee on 37 minutes). The two goal lead at the beginning of the second half gave the team the confidence to launch attack after attack, with the opposition goalkeeper constantly under pressure, the third goal was slotted home at 48 minutes (Zeanna Ortiz). With the opposition now pinned down in their own half the goals followed thick and fast with Elise Dapper on 58 minutes, Vianne Schein on 61 minutes and the final goal coming from the other half of the Dapper Duo, Olivia, with only two minutes left on the clock. As comfortable as a 6-0 victory sounds the seventeen kept their concentration and the pressure on throughout a hard fought game and got their well-deserved victory.
A very proud Coach Szuster.
Friday18th March 2016 Official - Today's Halos game postponed
Thursday17th March 2016 Wings vs Hinkley HS: 10-0 Picture the scene. The weather was coming in. The grass, once green, was slowly turning white. It was then that the Wings decided as a team, and as a favor to their coach, to play their hearts out until the "Mercy Rule" (winning the game by 10 goals and the match is ended) was invoked. The opposition were pinned down for more than 90% of the first half with the ball never entering our goal area even once. Our first four goals came in quick succession, each from the shoes of Emily Turner, her final goal coming on the 15 minute mark. Next 15 minutes came a long dry barren COLD spell with lots of chances but no goals. After 30 frozen minutes Chloe McNamee got her first and Wings fifth goal to break the spell and open the floodgates. Fast and furious, over the final ten minutes of the half (and the game) goals came from Sophie Antonopoulos (31 mins) Olivia Dapper (32 & 38 mins) with Chloe McNamee getting her second and Wings ninth goal at 39 minutes on the clock. In an effort to not have to start the second half (by invoking the Mercy Rule) the big push went on to get our tenth goal and our efforts were rewarded when a shot from short range billowed the net - and it was all over. The Wings clinical dispatching of Hinkley in one half of the game gave them the praise and accolades deserving of their efforts over the 40 minutes (and the praise and accolades of their coach - somewhere, under a silent dusting of snow on the sideline).
A very proud (and frozen) Coach Szuster.

Practice today directly after school (3pm)
Tuesday 15th March 2016 Halos vs Columbine HS: 1-3 We played our first game yesterday and the Halos fought gallantly. Our freshman, playing against a physically bigger team (which included a junior and six sophomores), kept the first half at 0-0 until the last 10 minutes when a bad call from the referee (the opposing team had a player in an offside position and who was involved with the play - she was impeding our goalkeeper's full view of the ball when the shot came in) allowed us concede the first goal. The second goal came shortly before the half-time whistle however the second half played out completely differently. Halos had most of the possession throughout the second half with the opposition scoring a third goal against the run of play. With increasing pressure on their defenders - the opposition goalkeeper was kept very busy (having multiple good saves throughout the second half) - we finally broke through and got our first goal of the season. With fifteen minutes remaining on the clock, and with the score now at 1-3, we were awarded a penalty kick and, with their goalkeeper well beaten, the ball screamed toward the goal. Unfortunately, as our luck on the day would have it, the ball struck the crossbar with tremendous force and came back into play. The second half score of 1-1 and the final score of 1-3 did not reflect the level of chances and possession that the Halos had in that very exciting second half and all of this effort and pressure bodes well for the rest of their season.
A very proud Coach Szuster.
